We are looking for a data scientist to join our team to collaboratively create the next generation of tools and solutions in AbbVie Research and Development IT.

Key job elements include: Drives strategic business initiatives by researching, analyzing and interpreting data, Develops algorithms to model and identify areas of opportunity. Provides solution architecture leadership and support to the respective business functional areas. Establishes, maintains, communicates and oversees the application of application and data architectures and technology standards for multiple systems. Solves complex technical problems involving the establishment and integration of multiple large IT systems, requiring deep technical expertise. Develops original solutions to complex problems. Provide direction to senior IT technical resources. Investigates and evaluates new technologies for alignment with business need, fit with existing and planned architectures and product maturity. Sets and enforces divisional technical standards. Partners with infrastructure architects to assure alignment of infrastructure, data and application architectures.



Key Responsibilities Include:


Use statistical, mathematical, and predictive modelling skills to build a comprehensive platform for data analysis over large data sets.
Create algorithms to identify trends/patterns by analyzing electronic health records
Provide thought leadership on diverse projects by leveraging concepts and ideas from multiple disciplines
Use business intelligence tools to create analytical models; integrate data sets and work with multiple systems to extract and use data for deeper analysis
Assist in the data mining and machine learning strategies and the execution of corresponding procedures
Evaluates application and data system needs across multiple systems used across the division. Develops and prepares corresponding application and data architectures and technology standards.
Required to stay current in relevant new technologies and industry trends and have a deep knowledge in core technologies used in the organization.
Coordinates the activities of the application and data architecture team consisting of the senior technologists in each of the relevant disciplines. This coordinated activity creates and maintains the architecture standards and performs architecture reviews and approves the technology purchases made in the organization.
This activity is performed in partnership and alignment with other divisional architecture efforts (i.e. other application and data areas and infrastructure architecture efforts).
Performs technical oversight of implementation projects to assure alignment with architecture and technology standards.
Performs technology and product evaluations and recommends the purchase and introduction of new technologies that can meet unfilled business needs.
Communicates and educates the technical and business communities on current architectures and technologies and industry trends. Performs related duties as assigned or requested.
Receives general direction from the Sr. Systems Architect.
Supervises activities of application and data architecture team and Technical Leads on projects. Acts as Project Manager on product and technology evaluation projects.
Responsible for compliance with applicable Corporate and Divisional Policies and procedures.
This position has a very high impact on division productivity related to the implementation, cost and effectiveness of IT systems.
Is highly accountable for the effectiveness, quality and timeliness of architecture direction and application for a substantial portion of divisional systems impacting total cost of ownership, productivity of a large portion of business unit work force and cost of future enhancements and integrations of systems and the ability to extract executive level decision making information from systems in a timely manner.
Activities determine ability of division to comply and support the Abbott wide IT strategy and therefore are a key determinant in that strategy's technical success or failure.
Ability to command respect of senior technologists will determine both success of division IT strategies and recruitment and retention of key senior technologists.
Accountable for technical cohesion and level of technical risk for system portfolio of approximately $5-10 Million/year in new system implementations on top of a base technology investment of approximately $100 Million.

Qualifications

Basic:


Bachelor degree in Computer Science or a related discipline with and an advanced degree preferred at least 9, typically 12 or more years of solid, diverse work experience in systems analysis, design and programming, or its equivalent in education and work experience.
An in-depth knowledge of system alternatives and technology is essential.
An in-depth knowledge of industry trends and best practices is essential.
Deep knowledge of application and information architecture approaches. Excellent analytical skills, judgment and management ability are required.
Experience with developing optimization and probabilistic classification, inference, or control models. The candidate must have understanding of underlying theories and at least five years of experience developing solutions using machine learning, optimization, and predictive analytics
Experience with techniques for parallel distributed computing. Experience with Hadoop is a plus.
Familiarity with NoSQL databases such as Cassandra, Hbase, CouchDB, and MongoDB
Knowledge and experience working with the SQL query language
Programming skills in at least one of: C, Java, Python, Ruby or similar
Experience working in a Unix/Linux environment
Excellent communication skills, both verbal and written, and the ability to effectively communicate requirements
Ability to interact and effectively communicate with diverse groups of technical and non-technical people, including senior executives internally and externally


Preferred:


Hands on experience working with Hadoop (Cloudera, Apache, Hortonworks, etc.) and working with MapReduce development using Pig, Hive, Scoop
Experience with statistical and data analysis software or libraries such as Matlab, SAS, R and NumPy/SciPy
Experience with Mahout
Experience with Amazon Redshift or other columnar databases
Proficiency at transforming data, data classification and translations, as well as resolving data quality and data cleansing
Experience with search engines/libraries such as Lucene and/or Solr
Understanding design and use of relational databases including experience working with working knowledge of dimensional modeling, star schemas and working with time-series data
Masters or PhD in a computational discipline (e.g., Engineering, Applied Mathematics, Computer Science, Cognitive Science, Biological Sciences)
